6. Bowel Issues and poo talk, sorry!

Bowel and Intestine Issues

In the six weeks that Boson has been recovering, he has not had a firm poo. Being raw fed, his stools are usually small, firm and mostly odourless. The prednisolone is an irritant to his digestive system, and combined with the amount he is eating, the end product is huge, sloppy and very nasty. And they have been worse since the Omeprazole finished.
Being unable to contact the Neurologist, our vet agreed to give Boson the once over. He has put on 1.5kg in the last week, his belly is normal (for him) and no enlargement of his liver. She gave us more Prokolin and Antepsin gastro protectant.
Neither of these have helped, nor has any other additive we have tried. So, running out of options, we have changed his food back to dry kibble.  Almost immediate improvement! It seems he just can't tolerate or digest raw properly at the minute. But as long as he is eating well, and seems happier, he can keep going with it!

Today we went down from 2 steroids twice per day to 3 tablets every other day. Hopefully having a day off the steroids will help his system recover quicker. We will see!

We had noticed that Boson wouldn't (or couldn't) wag his tail, and had been unable to do so since his diagnosis. But yesterday I got a little wag when I came home! Small triumphs!

I keep reading about the benefits of CBD oil for dogs. There seems to be some evidence that it can make the prednisolone more effective, so in theory he will need less. I am going to research this further, and speak to the neurologist before trying it.

Boson seems brighter in himself, and is enjoying his walks which are getting longer now! The lack of muscles mean hills are hard work, but for the most part he is happily trotting at my side.

The improvements may be small, but they are improvements! I get frustrated that he's not back to his old self quicker, but I will just have to be more patient!

Thanks again for reading.
